How to prepare for a S&T internship

Got an S&T internship for this summer at a canadian Big 5. Thing is they only really asked macro stuff, behaviourals, etc. Still a first year and I don’t really know how to model. I conceptually know how but haven’t made a model myself, and I wouldn’t really know how to wall you though the 3 statements well. How can I prepare so that I don’t make an absolute fool of myself this summer?

To prepare for your S&T internship at a Canadian Big 5 bank, here’s what you should focus on based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Understand the Basics of Financial Modeling: While S&T roles may not require heavy modeling like IB, having a foundational understanding of financial modeling can be helpful. You can explore free resources like the WSO Free Modeling Series, which includes lessons on financial statement modeling, DCF, M&A, LBO, and more. These are taught by experienced professionals and can give you a solid starting point.

  2. Brush Up on Macro Concepts: Since your interview focused on macroeconomics, ensure you stay updated on global market trends, interest rates, inflation, and central bank policies. This knowledge will be crucial for desk conversations and understanding market movements.

  3. Excel Skills: S&T roles often involve working with Excel for data analysis. Familiarize yourself with Excel shortcuts and basic functions. If you know the version of Office your bank uses, it might be worth reviewing specific features.

  4. Networking and Communication: A significant part of S&T internships involves networking within the firm and communicating effectively. Practice asking insightful questions and engaging in meaningful conversations with colleagues.

  5. Learn Desk-Specific Skills: If you know which desk you’ll be on (e.g., fixed income, equities, FX), research the products and strategies they focus on. For example, if it’s fixed income, understand bond pricing, yield curves, and credit spreads.

  6. Behavioral and Attitude Prep: Demonstrating a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn is key. Even if you’re not an expert, showing that you’re eager to improve and contribute will leave a good impression.

  7. Coding and Quant Skills (Optional): If you have a quantitative background or interest, brushing up on basic coding (e.g., Python, R) can be a bonus, especially for tasks like data analysis or automation.

For more detailed preparation, you can explore resources like the WSO Financial Modeling Templates and Interview Prep Guides. If you’re looking for a structured approach, consider the WSO Elite Modeling Package, which covers essential skills for finance roles.

Good luck with your internship—remember, it’s all about learning and growing!

You rarely need to model in S&T and no clue how you landed that in first year.
