IB to Trading?
This summer I have an energy ib internship at a decent bank. Last summer I was in intern for an analyst at a crude trading group. i want to get a solid finance background to open doors, so I want do put in 2 years in banking before making my next move. Is it possible to go from being an IB analyst to a TDP or something in ops with the end goal of being a trader? Particularly interested in energy.
I know anything is possible but curious as to the odds of it happening.
In energy trading, guessing at one of the two places you have in mind. Yeah it’s possible sure, but why? If trading is the end goal, your IB years will give you no advantage. Not really any overlapping skill sets either
I understand that IB won't really give me an advantage, I just truly have no idea as to which industry I want to get in. I figured it made more sense to figure it out while saving as much money as possible from the higher comp at entry levels in banking.
Yeah honestly very tough decision that I empathize with having been in the same situation a few years back. Won’t happen today - a bit swamped, but I’ll go through some of my past DMs breaking down my decision along with my thoughts after a few years on the other side. I’ll DM you. Either way the grass will always be greener type situation

Too many people focus on maximizing "career optionality", I know you're quite young obviously, and not even in the industry yet, but if you want to be a trader - be a trader. If you have the opportunity to get into a trading seat out of undergrad you should take it. Prop shops typically don't hire anyone other than kids straight out of uni, or previously in trading. No recognizable prop is gonna pick up someone with 2 YoE in IB as a junior trader. You don't really have any transferrable skills, and unless you're a STEM major or have extensive programming experience it's hard to come off otherwise.
If you want to end up in trading then I'd start in trading. Not sure you'd realize any material gain in pay doing IB in the meantime... market is not in IB favor currently
Not sure where I want to end up. IB opens a lot of doors that interest me (PE, HF etc.) but commodities trading also interests me, thats why I want the 2 years in IB to have a finance background should I decide on PE or something similar.
I was in a similar spot about 2 years ago. Picked what I was interested in and its paying off big time. Being interested in something makes it much easier to become very very good at what you do, which will materialize to higher pay. Don't think about the pay right now. If you cant get a short term PE internship or something like that to figure out what you want to do, I'd just "network" with people in PE and ask them about their lifestyle and day to day to get a feel for if you'd like it. Nothing too serious or stressful. Don't tell them you want to trade... they'll ask themselves why tf they are even talking to you. Act interested in PE and they will tell you what its like. BTW -> you can certainly go to a HF with trading experience lol, idk why WSO thinks only IB guys go to HF, there are tons of Macro HF around the world that only want Fixed Income and Commodity trading experience, which you don't get in IB/M&A. Obviously if you wanna go to a l/s equity trading HF then go to IB. But it sounds like you're more interested in macro FI/Comms. Just my 2cents
