Interested in Commodities Trading but don’t know where to start.

Hi All, Looking for advice on how to break into the commodity trading industry/if i have a chance whatsoever to break in. I’m currently a research analyst focused on infrastructure private equity (mostly renewables) at a MM asset manager in the UK (if it matters this is the asset management arm of an insurance company).

I’m really interested in commodities trading but I have a very unique background whereby I didn’t go to university to get my undergrad but instead joined one of the b4 at 18 in their audit team and spent 2 years there before pivoting to FO Asset Management. Because of my experience I was accepted onto an MFin program which I’m studying part time at a non/semi target (think Cass, kings etc). I have a few questions and would appreciate any advice from some of the more experienced people on this forum:

  1. I know a lot of engineers come from a math/engineering/physics background I would say I’m not extremely mathematical but am ok with numbers. Does this hold me back or is it irrelevant?

  2. Considering my unique background how difficult would it be to land an internship or grad scheme at the likes of Shell/BP/Trafigura or Glencore?

  3. How much knowledge would you say you need to know in order to secure one of these programs and how do I start preparing for that?

  4. How do I best position myself to secure a role in the commodities space and does my background in infra help here considering I cover renewables?

Thanks everyone!
