Internal Mobility at JPM

Hi WSO community,

I joined one of the desks full-time last week, but do not really see myself staying here for long. Was curious how does internal mobility work. Would love to stay within the same business, just in a different role.

Internal mobility at JP Morgan is possible, but it requires careful navigation and strategy. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:

  1. Timing and Performance:

    • You typically need to be in your current role for at least a year before making a move. This aligns with bonus cycles and headcount considerations.
    • It's crucial to excel in your current role. Strong performance and positive feedback are essential to be considered for internal mobility.
  2. Discretion and Politics:

    • Avoid openly discussing your desire to switch roles with your current team or other colleagues, especially interns. This could lead to negative feedback or damage your reputation.
    • When asked about your intentions, provide a general response, such as enjoying your current role and exploring how it fits into the broader business.
  3. Networking and Communication:

    • Build relationships with the team or group you’re interested in joining. Reach out to individuals in that group, express your interest, and seek advice.
    • If you have a good relationship with someone in the desired group, you can ask for guidance or insights about potential opportunities.
  4. HR and Process:

    • JP Morgan encourages internal mobility and even hosts networking sessions to facilitate it. However, the process is contingent on your performance and the availability of roles.
    • Your sponsor or manager in your current group will be the only one informed about your application to another group. They are expected to support your mobility rather than hinder it.
  5. Key Advice:

    • Keep your intentions private and maintain professionalism in your current role.
    • Leverage internal resources, such as the intranet, to identify mobility chairs or open positions within the firm.
    • Approach the process strategically, ensuring you don’t burn bridges with your current team.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of successfully navigating internal mobility at JP Morgan.

Pm me - but the tl;dr is it's doable as long as you have a supportive manager but you are wayyyyy too early to open that conversation. Give it 6 months to a year - I was miserable at first, but once you learn the job you will likely feel quite different
