Is this normal for Capital Markets Operations, or did I land on a bad team?
I’m three weeks into a capital markets operations role at a large bank and am trying to determine whether my experience is typical or team-specific.
I took the role to gain experience at a large bank and potentially move into another area later. The work supports trading and client activity, but it is not front office.
My main concern is my supervisor, who is also training me. Her communication often feels dismissive or passive-aggressive. For example, when I’m doing something for the first time, she says: "You’ve seen this before,” even when I haven’t. As if I'm the idiot that didn't pay attention but in reality I've never seen that and it's my first time doing it. I wanted to answer back but I don't want enemies so I just sucked it up.
Training has also been rushed. I’ve only been performing some tasks independently for about two days, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to still have questions. However, I now hesitate to ask because I feel I’ll be made to feel incompetent. Given that the work involves trades and significant amounts of money, I’d rather ask than make an avoidable mistake.
I’m trying to stay professional and avoid creating conflict, but my manager mentioned on my first day that the team has had relatively high turnover, which makes me wonder whether there is a broader issue.
For those with experience in capital markets operations, middle office, trade support or clearing:
• Is this environment typical?
• Can operations realistically be a stepping stone into other areas?
• Does my supervisor’s behavior sound normal for a new hire, or is the team likely the problem?
• Should I document interactions privately, or simply keep my head down and push through?
