London Job Market 2021/2022
The London job market has been bad for a while now with Brexit and now Covid.
1) prior to the brexit vote in 2016 was it this bad?
2) do you think it will get better in the near future?

Career Resources
It is very good for quant, innit?

Why do you think so? If you can generate revenue there are many platforms like Citadel, MLP, balyasny, GSA, etc.
Also there are many firms on high frequency side.
It was nowhere near this bad but it was still pretty bad compared to US. Saw you're interested in quant, let me put it this way - if you do a PhD at MIT/Stanford or a good Ivy and want to do tech/finance in the US you're looking at at least $200k/year even at low cost of living locations unless you mess up recruiting really badly. At my first job after uni (tech) I saw many Oxbridge/Imperial PhDs working for ~£40k. That said, there are seats in London where you can make US-style money right away but they are a lot fewer.
I agree that there isn't exactly a booming market but I'm seeing a bit more lateral opportunities opening up lately - so maybe things are getting better? (trading side)
the relative advantage of London as a career prospect is weakening vs NYC
weaker pound = salaries in equivalent FO roles in NYC are >30% higher in USD terms at graduate level
brexit = business moving to Europe, expansion of Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, etc etc
what is the upside? hard to see any
Work-life balance is much better than US and London is a much better city to live in than European capitals (a different argument could maybe be made if you speak the local language). But I agree that NYC looks better right now.
