Lower A-level grades than expected, cooked?
Just been accepted to study maths and stats at Durham uni.
I got A* maths, A Further Maths, C Physics and a B in an EPQ
I’m trying to get into to sales and trading - commodities.
Can I still get spring week - grad scheme if I do everything else right or is the C in physics a blocker.
Thx
Your A-level grades, while not perfect, are not necessarily a dealbreaker for securing spring weeks or a graduate scheme in sales and trading, especially in commodities. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you need to know:
Focus on Your Strengths: Your A* in Maths and A in Further Maths are strong indicators of your quantitative ability, which is highly valued in sales and trading roles. Highlight these achievements prominently in your applications.
University Reputation: Durham is a respected university, and while it may not be a traditional "target" school for all firms, it is still well-regarded. Leverage this by networking with alumni who have broken into finance from Durham.
Spring Week Applications: For spring weeks, firms often look at a combination of grades, extracurriculars, and demonstrated interest in finance. While the C in Physics might raise questions, it’s not an automatic disqualifier. Be prepared to explain it if asked, but focus on showcasing your strengths in other areas.
Extracurriculars and Networking: To offset any concerns about your grades, build a strong profile through extracurricular activities, relevant internships, and networking. Join finance societies, participate in trading competitions, and attend networking events to demonstrate your commitment to the field.
Technical Skills: Sales and trading roles, especially in commodities, value strong quantitative and analytical skills. Consider learning programming languages like Python or R, and familiarize yourself with financial modeling and market analysis.
Resilience and Storytelling: Many successful professionals in finance have overcome academic setbacks. Use your story to demonstrate resilience, adaptability, and a willingness to learn. Firms value candidates who can turn challenges into opportunities.
In summary, while the C in Physics might not be ideal, it’s not a career-ending issue. Focus on excelling in your degree, building relevant skills, and networking effectively. If you do everything else right, you can absolutely secure a spring week and progress to a graduate scheme in sales and trading.
