Macquarie vs Valero Trading Internship?

I have been fortunate enough to receive internship offers from both companies in trading roles. How different would the two roles be and how different of paths would I be put on?

My goal is to eventually be able to get a trading seat at a Vitol or Citadel in commodities.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Macquarie Trading Internship:

  • Role and Path: Macquarie is known for its strong presence in infrastructure, energy, and commodities trading. An internship here would likely expose you to a broad range of trading activities, including physical and financial trading.
  • Career Path: Macquarie's trading roles can lead to opportunities in various sectors, including energy and commodities. The firm has a reputation for providing a solid foundation in trading, which can be beneficial for transitioning to top-tier trading firms like Vitol or Citadel.

Valero Trading Internship:

  • Role and Path: Valero is a major player in the oil and gas industry, focusing primarily on refining and marketing petroleum products. An internship here would be more specialized in oil trading, providing deep insights into the physical trading of crude oil and refined products.
  • Career Path: A role at Valero would set you on a path within the oil and gas sector. While this is highly specialized, it can be advantageous if you aim to become an expert in oil trading. This specialization can also be a stepping stone to trading roles at firms like Vitol, which has a strong focus on oil and energy commodities.

Comparison and Recommendation:

  • Exposure: Macquarie offers broader exposure across various commodities, which might be beneficial if you want a more diversified trading experience. Valero, on the other hand, offers deep specialization in oil trading.
  • Career Goals: If your ultimate goal is to secure a trading seat at Vitol or Citadel, consider where you want to specialize. Macquarie's broader exposure might provide more flexibility, while Valero's specialization could make you a strong candidate for oil-focused roles at Vitol.

Conclusion:

Both internships offer valuable experiences, but your choice should align with your long-term career goals in commodities trading. If you prefer a broader exposure, Macquarie might be the better option. If you want to specialize in oil trading, Valero could be more advantageous.
