Many people move back office to front office

Just thought I’d drop a note here to give hope for people who want to make the move.

I have met a LOT of people in my time who moved from back office to front office. Admittedly it’s heavily tilted towards S&T vs IBD (most common move I’ve seen here is Big4 > IBD) but it’s not uncommon.

Lots of posts I see on here talk about if they can move, and yes it can be done, but don’t expect it to be instant. Takes a few years of manoeuvring and networking, but do not give up if that’s what you really want.

Commodities particularly, Ops to trading is a very tried and true method. A lot of guys from very non prestigious backgrounds with their own books after paying their dues.

Exactly. The Ops guys are there and just in the thick of it as the FO people. They’d rather hire those they already know and work with on a daily basis, than some fresh kid out of undergrad.

Pay your dues and earn what’s yours. Don’t listen to the fear mongering rhetoric on here from those that don’t know what it’s like from the inside.

Prospect in S&T - Comm:

What fear mongering rhetoric are you referring to?

That if you aren’t a BB S&T analyst your first summer out of undergrad you might as well end it all because your career is over
