Preparing for Fixed Income Trading Interviews - Fabozzi, CFA Level 3, or Other Resources?

Hi,

I’m graduating next year and aiming for a career in Trading, specifically on a Fixed Income desk. I’m currently preparing for technical interviews and would appreciate your advice on the best resources to focus on.

I’ve heard that Fabozzi’s Fixed Income Securities is a must-read for understanding bond markets and products. However, I’m wondering if the Fixed Income section of the CFA curriculum (up to Level 3) is sufficient to cover the technical knowledge expected in interviews.

Do you have any experience or recommendations on which resource is more relevant for effective preparation? Should I combine both, or is one more suitable than the other for Fixed Income Trading interviews?

Additionally, are there any other books or alternatives you would recommend to strengthen my technical skills and market knowledge for this field?

Thanks in advance

For Fixed Income Trading interviews, here's a breakdown of the most effective resources based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Fabozzi’s Fixed Income Securities:
This is a highly recommended resource for understanding bond markets and products. It’s particularly useful as a desk reference and for diving deep into specific fixed income instruments. However, it might not be the best for a comprehensive overview if you're just starting out. Use it to clarify complex topics or as a supplement to your broader preparation.

  2. CFA Curriculum (Fixed Income Sections):
The CFA curriculum, especially up to Level 3, provides a solid foundation in fixed income concepts, including yield curves, pricing, and interest rate dynamics. While it’s thorough, it might not be tailored specifically to the trading mindset or the practical nuances of a trading desk. It’s a good complement to Fabozzi but not a standalone solution for trading interviews.

  3. Other Recommended Books:

    • Interest Rate Swaps and Other Derivatives by Howard Corb: A classic for understanding swaps and derivatives, which are crucial in fixed income trading.
    • The Trader's Guide to Key Economic Indicators by Richard Yamarone: Great for understanding how macroeconomic data impacts markets, a critical skill for trading.
    • Handbook of Fixed Income Securities by Fabozzi: While not the best for a beginner, it’s a valuable resource for specific queries about fixed income products.
  4. Additional Tips:

    • Regularly read the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) for market news and explanatory articles, especially on fixed income topics.
    • Use Investopedia and Wikipedia to fill in gaps or clarify terms you encounter during your preparation.
    • Practice with mock interviews and review the WSO Fit Interview Guide to prepare for the behavioral aspects of interviews, which often carry significant weight.

Recommendation:
Combine the CFA curriculum for foundational knowledge with Fabozzi for in-depth understanding of specific products. Supplement this with Corb’s book for derivatives and Yamarone’s for macroeconomic insights. Regular reading of WSJ and practicing interview questions will round out your preparation effectively.
