Rates/FX Sales to Macro HF?

Realized I should have posted this in the S&T forum not the HF forumn, but basically I have an opportunity coming up full time for most likely rates/FX desks in sales positions, and was wondering about the potential to move from this role to a macro hedge fund in the future, or if it would be necessary to try and move to a trading or research role first? Thanks!

Why specifically in macro? Really curious - do you learn the market/product better in rates sales than in equity deriv sales or commodity sales or IG sales etc?
