Recruiting for HF/Prop from S&T

Most of the discussion I could find here on buy-side public markets recruiting is from the perspective of a student. What about folks from S&T?

For those that have made the transition, what did you have to do to achieve it?

Thanks!

Moved very recently from a bank to a commodities trade house in energy (paper)

It really depends on your specific desk in S&T; some products have very transferable skill sets while others don’t. Was lucky enough to get a seat in a good asset class and a few more things fell my way, partly luck and also partly because I had the sense to position myself strategically

Especially in 2020-22, the flow desks of many banks were doing well, and many people blindly went for desks that came off a good run but which probably might not have excellent prospects in the medium term. My product had a bumper 2020-23 period as well, and is in a bit of a lean year in 2024, but at least it provided a very transferable set of skills that I’ve now been able to utilise outside a bank environment

In terms of the actual transitioning & job change process, headhunters will reach out often and generally they have a pretty good idea of whether you are in demand or not, I’d say you may not have to ever apply for a job (I didn’t), just make sure you are able to articulate your edge and present your story well

What's your view on which asset classes that can provide such a positioning?

My bank is relatively flexible with transferring asset classes at the junior level.

How did you position yourself for the exit?

Seeing that you're in a commodities fund now, I've heard of bumper years for sell-side commodities in the past half-decade. Do you see that to be the case going forward? And which asset class in commodities should one focus on to position themselves well in the medium term? (No need to go into detail though for fear of doxx. Very curious as I'll be placed in commodities too).

Lastly, how do headhunters find you? Is there a list of headhunters that I can shoot my resume to?

Thank you so much in advance for answering.
