Should I choose comp over reputation / learning?
Is it better to go to a shop where it is a top desk but stingy about pay or better to go to a place with top pay but desk is mediocre? Assume I am analyst/associate (ignore username)

What difference in pay would there be at that level? 25-75k? Definitely take better culture, learning opportunities as that will have a much higher lifetime benefit. If you don’t learn, you’ll likely fall behind on money vs someone who learned anyways even if they started out lower. Whether that be for the same job or the next one.
At the analyst/associate level, always choose learning > comp.
That is of course assuming the lower paying job still pays salary that allows you to live a reasonably decent lifestyle.
I did this mistake and I was by far the stupidest thing I did. Choose comp.
goes to say learn something that’s makes you valuable. No sell side junior role does that. formatting decks quicker, coding automated offering sheets or responding to last minute fire drills from your MD is not what is learning. you want to get exposure to different products, find a niche, learn some secret sauce or develop decent connections and hopefully carve out some experience that you can take independent of the strength of the platform/franchise
