Starting your own physical shop
Not under any delusions about being the next Glencore but I’m curious about starting my own shop. I’ve been trading agri commodities for about 6 years now. My rolodex is pretty deep and my commodity book is relatively niche. Financing seems to be the biggest hurdle. Anybody here ever go out on their own? How’d it go?
Know people who did it, you basically need 1 real big customer. But usually they go to a Biourja, Freepoint, Hartree style place that offers a lot autonomy and path to grow the business. This is more energy though not sure how the mid-size shops are in Ags.
Very interested in this response as I am in the same situation. 4 YOE & looking to go out on my own. Have already floated the idea out to my main business partners that have given verbal commitments. Financing is the next hurdle though…
Find a role at Mercuria, Hartree Citadel type shop where you can truly take ownership of your business plan in the nascent stages while not having to sacrifice your own funding for a few years until you have $100+MM in funding
Credit will be your largest hurdle. I've seen a few shops pop up over the past year and credit and cost of capital is their biggest liability, this will eat into your margin.
