Summer Analyst NYC from Europe
Hi guys, I am currently a student in a French university and was exploring different opportunities in the finance industry. Do you think it is possible to join a summer analyst program in the US (2025)? Several people told me I had no chance, but I still wanted to check here on your opinions. Thanks for the help!
Hey there! Swinging from the branches of Wall Street Oasis, I've seen quite a few discussions about international students aiming for summer analyst positions in the US. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you should consider:
Visa Sponsorship: This is a big one. You'll need a company willing to sponsor your visa, which can be a hurdle. However, larger banks (BB/EB/MM) might be more equipped to handle such cases.
Networking: Your chances increase significantly if you can build a strong network. The WSO Networking Guide can be your golden banana here. Reach out to alumni, use LinkedIn, and attend any events that might connect you to the industry.
Experience and Skills: Make sure your resume shines with relevant experience and skills. The WSO Resume Review service can help polish it until it gleams.
Preparation: Ace your interviews by being well-prepared. The WSO Investment Banking Prep Pack can provide you with the necessary tools to impress.
While some may say it's a long shot, it's not impossible. With the right preparation and a bit of luck, you might just land that summer analyst role in NYC. Keep your spirits high and your efforts consistent!

I don't think they would be willing to sponsor a visa just for an internship, to my knowledge people can start to change region once they some experience (and by using the connections/referrals they have).
If you have an American passport, I definitely think you have a shot. If you don't, gonna be very very tough. I won't say its impossible because you never know and there are various student related work visas that might be possible for you to get. I have no idea on the exact details and you could probably research this to find out, but there are foreign students in US universities that get interships so maybe something there that could apply to you.
I generally agree with this sentiment although I will note that foreign students studying in the US can use OPT for internships and for working after graduation as well which is not available if you study outside the US. I am not sure all the details about training visas like J1 or H3 but I think in most cases an even bigger hurdle than needing a visa for the internship which is already likely difficult/troublesome for the employer is needing a visa for full time work in which case foreign students studying outside the US would almost certainly need to lottery for the H1B which is very uncertain. If you want to just temporarily work in the US it may be possible to find some likely smaller company that runs all internships/training in the US even for employees who will be permanently working abroad as that tends to be more straightforward in terms of visa sponsorship. In terms of visa working abroad for at least a year and then transferring to the US is also permitted (L1 visa) but it may be difficult to find a firm to sponsor you for that.
I bet you could get a French bank to sponsor you, if not maybe another bank.
More importantly, the recruiting cycle for summer 2025 is 95% done. A few firms have a couple spots open from what I’m hearing, but it would take a lot of effort to get one. However, this is for BB/UMM. There may be spots open at bucket shops or smaller firms.
Best of luck!
