Switching from Oil to Natural Gas Scheduling
Hello - has anyone on here done the switch from oil/products scheduling or trading to the natural gas side? If so how was the switch? Similarities, difference?

Nobody has responded, so I'll bite. Experienced folks feel free to throw MS if I'm off base. I have not worked oil, but I have done work covering olefins which in the US is from Ethane (natural gas). The big thing with nat gas is that everything will travel on the pipe so if things get messed up on a relevant pipeline shit turns messy really quickly. This lies in contrast to oil and many other commodities where you have the optionality of vessels, rail cars, and trucks if necessary. Also nat gas depending on where it is produced has different storage dynamics so in Texas gas is stored in salt domes which can release and add gas quickly whereas in the upper midwest gas is stored differently which makes drawing and injecting a much longer process which can affect your job.
I am a current natural gas scheduler for a major midstream company in Houston. Don't know much about the oil side of things, but if you have any natural gas questions let me know.
Can I PM?
Know people that have done both.
I know that at the major NG trading shops, scheduling is a good way in. I've also heard that NG scheduling for a market participant (and not pipeline operator) is fairly administrative in nature. At least compared to oil, where pipelines are constantly put on allocation, etc
Think it's more of a preference than anything else. Why are you looking to switch? Lack of opportunities from current desk?
A guy at my shop went from scheduling truck gathering for oil in the DJ to NG scheduling on a major pipe in the NE...he was bored out of his mind and left after about a year in the role.
Predominately have an oil background but I've traded and scheduled multiple products. "Rules" stay the same start planning basis the end/desired result and work backwards organizing and sorting out the details. Look at is as an opportunity to become more knowledgeable and diversified. Similarities in terms of inco terms and planning should be the same you'll just need to develop an understanding of the details specific to nat gas but use the traders as support with questions etc. You'll be fine. Good Luck!
I think Nat Gas scheduling is a bit more simple than oil scheduling logistics. In our rotational program, nat gas scheduling would be a 1st year role where oil scheduling might be a 3rd year role.
