Timeline to buy side
Hi guys,
I wanted to ask you what the general timeline looks for a trader to go to the buy side (hedge funds or AMs). I'm talking about the FICC space, rather than equities. I'm in London but interested to hear about NYC and other cities as well.
Of course this is not banking, so there is no 2 years and out rule. How long after joining as a trader is it common to leave for the buy side? 3-5 years?
Thank you very much!
Whenever you can grab a seat. No need to wait 3-5 years. In fact, a lot of times it is easier to join buy side when you are fresh grad because you are cheap.
After you become more experienced, you are more likely be specialized in a specific product. But there are less and less experienced hiring for buyside nowadays, in particular for some niche product, then you might end up wait several years stuck in the bank.
You should start to hunt job all the time if your end goal is to join buyside. There just simply not that many of buyside jobs nowadays.
