Trading firm to Bulge Bracket
Hi, I have a quick question, many people have talked about how if you were to work for a prop trading firm the chances of you moving into a bulge bracket are slim. I don’t understand, IB’s also have prop desks and if you’re really good you can move on there, right? I mean firms like FNYS, DRW, SIG, Jane Street are very reputable and if you work for them that says a lot about you because they only hire top notch candidates. So why is the chance slim for a prop trader to work for a BB? I just don't understand the rationale behind this. Could someone please explain it?
Thank you
anyone
i think most people that go to prop firms like the one you mention aren't really looking to go to BBs because they make more money where they are already. what would the motivation be to go to the BB if you are a really good prop trader?
BB firm means more job security, more prestige, lower comp. If you're already established as a good trader, you'll make less at a BB. It's as simple as that for most people.
Not to mention that prop trading and market making are not the same, a person good at one is not necessarily good at the other.
got it, thank you
