How do guys at Traders@MIT and Quantfs at NYU know so much about trading? Is it pure self study?

Really... So an S&T internship actually teaches you options trading, algorithms etc? I always figured interns did stuff like ordering food or photocopying mostly
I've never done one but you get access to a lot of good info as an intern that many other kids cant. You can basically piggy back off of some poor under appreciated research analyst and steal their ideas. That's what I did in my PE internship - printed every research article to read later...
