In my experience as an intern on a credit trading desk we generally used it to automate data accumulation processes. For example pulling different figures from different workbooks daily to calculate some sort of metric we are tracking. I made several macros for the desk that were basically just pulling data from different sheets, cutting/sorting the data and displaying it in whatever form the desk wants it in. Also used VBA to cut down on simple manual tasks like maing buttons to send daily emails or uploading files to different paths daily etc...

Automation for what old analysts have already been doing on spreadsheets. Create button or quick visualization for data flowing in and out of multiple spreadsheets.

For more adhoc side of things: sometimes I will do some quick calculation myself on spreadsheets since the data is already there. And VBA makes some calculations a bit easier/more manipulatable. Plus you can do some more customizable scrapping and email sending.

Already know a bit of python and am striving to improve my skills. What makes you think VBA isn't that important? I've seen a few job descriptions that state VBA as a requirement.
Edit: Also wanted to add that I'm aiming for commodity derivative trading.
