What programming languages do strats use?

I'm learning Java right now (thanks, Intro CS), and I know it's not really applicable. I've heard the most quantitative roles use MatLab, what other languages are popular? I'm looking towards algorithm development, etc.

Thanks!

Depends on the firm and the team. Also, know that in some places there is a distinction between strats and a quant developer. Strats may use code to run investment strategies, but quant developers may be more for designing platforms for trading (S&T). Just something to keep in mind. I think in all the job postings for a quant developer role I've ever seen, and I would estimate I've looked at 500 or more, I would say less than 10 have asked for MatLab. Seems to me mechanical/civil engineers use MatLab way more than finance. R, C++, Python is what I see out there most for quant type developer roles. You should go read this as well https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/what-are-traders-doing-with-pyth….

It depends. I don't know much about strats roles but a lot of times legacy systems require use of matlab. Axioma for example has done a lot of work to create matlab APIs that portfolio optimization guys use. They have a python API now but of course not all companies transition to that and even if they do it doesn't happen all at once. The industry is moving towards python but it certainly does not hurt to know matlab as it is more than likely that it will come in handy.
