You did not get an S&T return offer...what is next

Seeing that return offer rates are low, I thought it would be a good idea to put something together on what interns should be doing/thinking about moving forward.

1. Did you actually like the job/environment and is this something you see yourself wanting to do with you career?  Step back and take a second to think if this is what you actually want to do, I know emotions are running high right now but if you realize that S&T is not a fit, you can save yourself a lot of time and energy by starting to explore different options.  Its very different than a normal corporate job and for some people the environment is just not a fit.

2. What did you like about S&T and how can I find what I enjoyed in other roles?  This will help you craft your story for other opportunities.

3. What other jobs should I be considering that will allow me to gain relevant skills for S&T and build my network of people that can help me get into S&T down the line.  Hiring in S&T is so random and unpredictable that you just never know when there will be a need for a junior person with some relevant experience.  Anything that is markets based (buyside and there are so many levels of buyside where you can build a really good network) or client facing (private banking, buyside sales, electronic trading providers, etc) where you can get licenses is a good place to start.  You see a lot of people who come from some tangential job with a couple of years of experience come over to S&T and end up doing really well, its not the end of the world not getting in out of college.

Not everyone has a say for hiring... sometimes not even a MD have a say because there is just way too much politics especially if it's a rotational program
