Accounting Background Helpful in Either Corp Fin (not banking)/PE/VC?

Hi,

So basically, I go to a non-target right now and I want to eventually go to Asia and ideally work for a PE/VC firm or else become a top executive at a F500 type of firm. I was wondering how helpful an extensive background in accounting will be? Unfortunately, while I'm good at math, I'm not PHD in mathematics or MFIN from Princeton or other super quant grad program good and I'm absolutely terrible at science, so even a bach in engineering, forget MS is out of the question. The thing that I am good at and enjoy is accounting (strange huh?) and I would definitely be open to considering a PHD in accounting from a prestigious school if it means I'll have a decent background to get into PE/VC. Therefore, I'm wondering if this would help at all, or if it will just be a waste of time/money?

thanks

I really don't think so.

a PhD in accounting is only good if you want to become a prof, I've never heard of an accounting PhD in the field.

You usually need banking to get into PE, so I don't know how you would plan on "backing in" with this accounting background. Having a quantitative background (finance, eng, math) is MUCH more valuable.

If you want to work for a F500 you can still do that. Apply to GE/J&J/Boeing/etc corporate finance programs (usually a 2 or 3 year rotational). These are very accounting oriented and are perfect for someone like you. After a couple years, go for an MBA and then try to move into the higher ranks (with a good MBA you could get into IB and POSSIBLY PE when you finish,

Accountings brutal, don't do it the rest of your life.

Accounting - EXTREMELY helpful at F500 (I speak from experience)

Accounting PhD - Useless in most circles (obv except academia)

To get to the levels you want you're going to have to kick some ass in the real world. At this point your focus needs to be getting the best job possible out of undergrad and then kicking ass at it. From there, you will transition as opportunities become available.

Also, F500 and PE are very different and rely on largely different skill sets.
