Advice for a VC hopeful.
I am looking for some advice as I enter my senior year of college. For some background information, I attend a top ten undergraduate business program (BusinessWeek), I am majoring in finance, and will graduate with a 3.7 gpa next spring. I am currently in my third internship with a very big player in the enterprise software industry in Silicon Valley doing finance and accounting. My previous internships were at a boutique strategy consulting firm and a very small VC firm (not in California).
Like a lot of people, I would like to break into VC in Silicon Valley from my undergrad, but from what I can tell it is a process that is easier said than done. The company I currently work for invests with quite a few of the large VC's in the area and I track part of the portfolio. I have thought about leveraging some of those contacts and having my manager give them a call for me.
I am wondering the best way to go about "getting my foot in the door" to have a better chance with an interview. Any advice?
Thanks in advance.
PS: I have a very tentative offer to go to a competitor in Silicon Valley when I graduate to work in their M&A department. From what I have heard, I would have some face to face interaction with VC's. Would this be a better play to transition into VC?
Not sure how much I can help but you sure as hell are in a better spot than most of your fellow senior undergrads.
go to the silicon valley competitor and then network from there....you need to be in the valley in person to land a VC gig
Just to clarify, I am currently doing my internship in Silicon Valley.
PM me if you're still interested.
