Break into US PE / VC as a European?

Hi Guys,

I'm a Western European, just started as a M&A analyst at a BB institution. However, I have realized that this is not what I want to pursue in my life. Actually, the main problem I have is that this jobs lacks of both the possibilty to take on responsibility and to creatively supply solutions to problems. I feel like a slave whose proposals are beaten up rather than being appreciated. I am sure that the job as a MD or VP is amazing. However, working 6 years 100 hours a week to get out of the cage is just not my thing.

Therefore, I was thinking about applying for position at some PEs and VCs, preferably in New York and California / Palo Alto. However, how do you value my chances a a European with a B.Sc. in Business Adm. and only almost one year of work experience? I definately want to obtain a MBA or even joint degree from a top tier university. Shall I attempt to achieve this first and apply afterwards?

Many thanks in advance
