Harder than if you were a banking analyst, but not impossible. Your best bet is to identify firms that also hired consultants and reach out informally for coffee chats with the former consultants... hear what they did, what the recruiting process was like, etc.

I disagree. I think it is clear that you won't be able to work for BX if you coming from a third tier consulting firm. That said, there are various MM PE funds which have a strong consultant culture. It might be more difficult than if you come from an IB, but it is definitely possible and happens more frequently than people believe. Networking is key for these roles.

Would you say networking is key irrespective of deal experience or is no deal experience = deal breaker ? I'm thinking of moving from consultant to PE but have no deal experience.

Agreed that a lot of PE firms have a strong consultant culture, but I still think that past MBB, there are only a couple of tier 2 consulting shops that reliably place people in PE or are thought of as providing truly relevant experience, especially when there are so many IB kids who want every PE spot.

Certainly, you won't be getting any PE headhunter love at a tier 2 consulting shop, you're going to have to network hard, be really technically prepped for the financial stuff, and really have a coherent story as to why you chose CO and now want PE. However, not impossible if you put in the work.

Note: I'm talking about fairly large PE firms I see on a regular basis. I know nothing about VC so not going to opine on that, and don't know anything about how recruiting works for smaller MM PE shops.
