Growth Equity

Looking for some clarification on growth equity firms, specifically regarding the stages they invest at and the level of operational involvement they have. Can someone clarify the distinction between the types of firms that function more as "late-stage VC" type funds, with large investments in startups at Series D, E, F, etc and those that invest outside of startups, or even in public companies (like Silver Lake's $1B investment in twitter in 2020)? Also, for funds like Thoma Bravo or Silver Lake, does the same investment team execute growth equity deals and LBOs, given that those funds do both? And, speaking from your experience or that of those you know, what level of operational control (i.e. pushing cost cuts, bolt-ons, etc) do they pursue?
