Growth Equity Outreach

Hi, I'm currently a long-only public equity investor (covering technology) looking to transition to a growth equity role. It seems my best bet to secure interviews is to reach out directly to current team members who may be able to get me into the door. I've figured the best path is to reach out with a 1-pager on a series a/b company who fits the mold the shop has typically or is evolving towards investing in. Otherwise, reach out on a specific deal they've recently done - asking to pick their brain on a call. Clearly, I am in uncharted waters. Any help on best means to go about securing interviews (outside of recruiters) would be super appreciated. Thanks!

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some effective strategies for securing interviews in growth equity roles:

  1. Direct Outreach to Team Members:

    • 1-Pager on a Series A/B Company: Craft a concise and compelling 1-pager on a company that aligns with the firm's investment criteria. Highlight why this company is a good fit and how it aligns with the firm's portfolio.
    • Specific Deal Discussion: Reach out to discuss a recent deal the firm has done. Express genuine interest and ask insightful questions to pick their brain on a call.
  2. Networking:

    • Alumni Networks: Leverage your alumni network. Alumni are often more willing to help and can provide valuable introductions.
    • Industry Contacts: Build relationships with industry contacts. Persistence is key, and don't get discouraged by rejections.
  3. Cold Emails:

    • Proactive Outreach: Cold emails can be effective. Tailor your emails to show your understanding of the firm's strategy and how you can add value.
  4. VC Job Openings:

    • Twitter and Websites: Follow handles like @vcrecruiting on Twitter and check John Gannon's website for job openings.
  5. Publications and Newsletters:

    • Stay Informed: Read publications by Jamin Ball, Alex Clayton, and deal announcement newsletters like Pro Rata (Axios) to stay updated on industry trends and deals.
  6. Volunteer and Mentorship:

    • Accelerators & Incubators: Volunteer for office hours and mentorship at accelerators and incubators. This helps build relationships and gain inside knowledge on promising startups.

By following these strategies, you can increase your chances of securing interviews and transitioning to a growth equity role. Good luck!
