Help -- Should I Take This VC Internship If My Final Goal Is IB?
Hi everyone, I am currently a rising sophomore (with a diversity background) at a U.S. T30 non-target school hoping to break it into investment banking. In my freshman summer, I remotely interned at a U.S. search fund and a marketing consulting firm with the hope that the prior will help me find a boutique IB internship in sophomore and the latter will pay my living expenses.
I am currently in the process of crazily searching for a sophomore in-semester boutique IB internship but have not secured even one first-round interview yet. At this point, my friend helped me secure a solid VC in-semester internship Superday opportunity. Here is the VC firm's description: "Our program provides hands-on support for partnerships, business development, fundraising, and growth combined with an initial investment package of US$150,000 with millions available in follow-on funding. Our focus is on digitalization to drive efficiency across ecommerce, fintech, media, healthcare, education, and logistics and drive a revolution for the next four billion."
My question for you is, if I do this VC internship, will my resume looks disorganized and disoriented by the time IB 2024 (diversity programs) and 2025 recruitment start? Because if I do I will have: a search fund (PE side), a VC, and a consulting listed, and it could be hard for explaining all the hassle. Should I just give it up and keep looking for boutique IB in-semester internships?
I appreciate any advice as this is a pressing decision. Thank you so much!!!
Hi Schrödinger’s Cat, just trying to help:
More suggestions...
You're welcome.
If you are interested or curious about VC, this is a great internship.
If you solely want to end up at a BB, then while this internship can only help in terms of making your resume better, I would say this will probably not move the needle enough to change a no offer to a yes offer... unless, the work you are doing at this internship is super related to what you might be doing with banking, but this does not seem at all like that kind of internship.
Because this internship will be taking up time from you pursuing a banking role, I would say it would make more sense to keep pursuing a boutique IB internship. The best use of you time right now would be networking the hell out of banks that you want to work at (reach out to analysts, go to information sessions, etc...). And don't sweat it if you don't get a boutique IB internship during the year. While it will help a lot in terms of validating your resume, pretty much no one is going to be coming in with that, and there can often be skepticism about the quality of those internships anyway.
