Interested in Venture Capital for Energy Innovation Companies

I've been thinking about the next steps in my career. My experience has been in Power/Utilities/Renewable Energy coverage, Project Finance, Tax Equity Financing, Tax Credit transfers, etc.

Initially I figured I could exit to a Private Equity firm that's focused in renewables but then started thinking about Venture Capital and if that could be a possible route for me.

Are there any Venture Capital groups focused in Renewables or Energy Innovation companies?
I've heard of Breakthrough Energy but can't imagine that they're hiring.

I have 5 years of experience and my MBA if that matters at all. Any advice for a potential next move for my career?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, transitioning from Power/Utilities/Renewables coverage into Venture Capital (VC) focused on energy innovation is a feasible path, especially with your background in Project Finance, Tax Equity Financing, and Renewable Energy. Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Venture Capital Groups in Renewables/Energy Innovation:

    • Breakthrough Energy Ventures: As you mentioned, they are a prominent player in this space, but hiring may be competitive. Networking with individuals in the firm or attending industry events could help you get on their radar.
    • Smaller VC Firms: There are boutique VC firms and growth capital funds focused on sustainable tech and energy innovation. These firms often raise funds in the $100-200M range and are part of larger organizations. Examples include firms that specialize in clean tech or energy transition technologies.
    • Corporate Venture Arms: Many large energy companies and utilities have venture arms focused on energy innovation. Examples include Shell Ventures, BP Ventures, and NextEra Energy Resources.
  2. Your Background and Fit:

    • Your experience in Project Finance and Tax Equity Financing aligns well with the financial structuring expertise needed in energy-focused VC roles.
    • An MBA and 5 years of experience are strong credentials, especially if you can demonstrate a deep understanding of the renewable energy ecosystem and emerging technologies.
  3. Exit Opportunities and Career Path:

    • Moving into VC from your current role is less common than transitioning to Private Equity (PE), but it’s possible. Highlighting your ability to evaluate innovative technologies and your understanding of the energy market will be key.
    • If VC proves challenging to break into directly, consider roles in Corporate Development at renewable energy firms or energy-focused PE shops. These roles often have crossover with VC and could serve as a stepping stone.
  4. Networking and Strategy:

    • Leverage your existing network in the renewables space to identify connections in VC. Many energy-focused VCs value industry expertise over traditional VC experience.
    • Attend industry conferences, such as those focused on clean tech or energy innovation, to meet potential employers and learn about emerging trends.
  5. Additional Resources:

    • Explore WSO’s Venture Capital Bootcamp or other training programs to build VC-specific skills and knowledge.
    • Research smaller VC firms or funds that may not be as well-known but are active in energy innovation.

Your background positions you well for a transition into energy-focused VC, but networking and demonstrating your ability to evaluate and support innovative companies will be critical.
