minorities and IB/PE/VC

From my exposure to Wall Street it seems as though minorities, specifically asians (and prob. indians as well), tend not to be represented well at the upper ranks in IB, with the exception for technology (TMT) and Healthcare (which in many ways is a creature of technology). Other groups seems to be white majority at the senior levels.

Looking at VC funds it seems as thought there are tons of asian/indians. Looking at PE shops, it seems as though it is a white majority. Hedge funds/ research tends to have a good representation, however that isn't quite where my interest is.

Are my viewpoints regarding asian/indians correct? And maybe, I guess my question is, should asian/indian minorities "strategize" accordingly? Anybody with insight please comment? I understand that asians will have some representation everywhere, but it seems like an odd distribution compared to the junior/lower-ranks.

Firstly, Indians are asians.

Secondly, it could be to do with interest. Now, I'm stereotyping massively here but most asians like tech and thus probably find it easier to excel in tech focused environments i.e VC, TMT, Healthcare.

I agree with the sentiment about Indians/Asians being more interested in TMT/healthcare/VC since they're more quantitative focused.

However, I'm Indian and I wanna work in PE and I'm really interested in a RE focused group of IBD, so if I ever make it I guess there's some Indian (Asian) representation out there lol.

Plus, I remember scrolling through Blackstone's senior management profile and I saw some Indians/Asians not only in India/Asia.

Even if there isn't much Indian/Asian representation out in PE which I'm not saying there is, you shouldn't be too afraid to work there just cause of your race. Case and point I'm at a BB PWM right now and everyone I work with
is white. I'm the only minority out here, but its good though sometimes people can't pronounce my name, which is annoying.

Just my 2 cents...

Since i go to a college in midwest, i ve never seen a minority banker. only one asian analyst from MS in chicago, hes kinda weird tho. this is pathetic. hope nyc is better.

Seriously? I'm from the midwest as well and I've seen minority bankers (analysts mainly) at every BB and most boutiques. Be wary (if you care, and you probably don't) of who you note in your posts as I was able to identify the guy

Who cares if Asians are overrepresented or underrepresented? If everyone took the attitude "I don't wanna go into something where I'm underrepresented", then we'd all still be living in Asian and Jewish ghettos. Suck it up and do what you're passionate about or good at.

(For the record, Asians are probably not overrepresented in finance if you take into consideration the demographics of the primary IB/PE/VC talent pool.)

I can identify who you're referring to as well. I'd be a little more careful if I were you, especially if you have something negative to say... It's really not that hard to identify who people are if you track their posts.
