Need help. Thoughts on these internships?

Given the option, would it be better to take a summer analyst position at a small VC (about 50 M aum) or a larger wealth manager (600 M aum). I don’t rly want to do asset management long term and likely want to do consulting long term. Both will be paid, but very low amounts. Also, already did asset management intern last year. At top target if this makes difference.

Ah, the classic conundrum of choosing the right internship! Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a breakdown that might help you swing from the vines with confidence:

  1. Venture Capital (VC) Internship:

    • Pros: VC experience can be quite valuable, especially if you're interested in the startup ecosystem or tech consulting in the future. It's analytical and can involve strategic thinking about market trends, business models, and growth potential, which are relevant skills in consulting.
    • Cons: A smaller fund size might mean less exposure to big deals, but it could also mean more hands-on experience.
  2. Wealth Management (WM) Internship:

    • Pros: A larger AUM suggests a more established firm with potentially more structured training and a broader client base. This could provide a solid foundation in financial markets and client relationship management.
    • Cons: Since you've already had an asset management internship and are not keen on a long-term career in asset management, another stint might not add much diversity to your resume.

Given that you're at a top target school and have a preference for consulting, the VC internship might offer a more unique experience that can set you apart. Consulting firms often value diverse experiences that demonstrate analytical skills, adaptability, and an understanding of different business models.

Since you've already dipped your toes in asset management, the VC role could provide a fresh perspective and new challenges. Plus, the skills and insights gained from VC could be quite transferable to consulting, where understanding the ins and outs of different industries and innovative companies is key.

Remember, it's not just about the name or the size of the AUM, but also what you'll actually be doing and learning during the internship. Make sure to consider the day-to-day responsibilities and how they align with your long-term goals. Swing high, future consultant!
