Possible to go from LevFin to growth equity?
I'm interning for a MM bank this summer under their LevFin group. Through networking, I've heard that M&A is really the place to be if you want to move into growth equity, so I'm wondering if I should think about lateraling to a different group.

yes coverage would be much better. You want to develop sector expertise to differentiate yourself from others. As ASO 2 said, sector expertise in LevFin won't be relevant bc its debt.
OP, don't worry too much about lateraling, you are still in a good spot. I have seen an analyst exit from Jefferies LF to a solid GE shop. All depends on how you network/spin your story. Just wanted to put that out there.
That’s good to hear! Though the other commenters definitely aren’t as optimistic lol. It’s a bit tough cause the bank I’m working for is a big debt shop, so LevFin was supposed to have the best exits, though I’m not sure where then
I am in BB LevFin and got the opportunity to progress through the rounds at a large GE fund (last fund 3bn+). I think I did not get the offer as quite frankly I am a bit far from the space and TMT bankers were better positionned for the role
Were you a generalist in your LevFin group?
Generalist in the sense working across industries then yes but only doing origination (no syndicate work), although I have done deals in the Tech space which helps...
Does the Lev Fin group at your bank hold the pen on the model or mainly deal with the papers / term sheet? If the former, I wouldn’t worry about getting looks from buyside firms across the spectrum
Hmm I think it’s a mixture of the two but seems like a lot of credit analysis which obviously wouldn’t be super relevant
Did you end up lateralling or staying? pretty sure I'm in the same or very similar group as you (WF Levfin) and am very interested in GE, curious what you ended up doing
