Sophomore Internship, which?- F500, PB at Tier 3, PWM/HF/VC???
Currently a sophomore (rising junior) at a target/semitarget searching for summer internship. Not so great GPA. Have pretty set chances/have gotten opportunities at F500 Corporate Finance, PB Private Banking at tier 3 bank (Nomura, HSBC, BNP) however it will be in Asia, and PWM/PE/HF/VC at much smaller firms in NYC. Which should I go with and why?
Note: My goal is just to break into IB eventually- prestige of firm/group is not important.
Thanks so much!
So you're comparing a private banking offer in asia to PWM, PE, HF, and VC offers in New York? Do you actually have offers for HF, PE, and VC in new york? Why didn't you try to get an IB internship this summer?
Hi there, sorry I wasn't clear! Basically I have pretty serious connections to leverage for the PB offer in Asia (though tier 3 bank, it's still a large bank and is pretty reputable in Asia). The PE, VC offers I applied and am currently in the process of interviewing for from my school's career center- they posted the positions there themselves. Of course of course of course they're not like super huge top level firms, they're like 5-10 man local shops. HF also found through university posting and PWM would be at a range of BBs (Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley, etc.)
Well since you are only a summer I'd organize offers in this order: PE firsts, it's the closest to IB and depending on the work a lot of it could be relevant to IB. Then PWM at BB, this would basically just to get the brand name on your resume. If you can afford it another option would be to cold email/call boutiques for an unpaid internship.
Thanks for the advice!
As for IB, well sophomore summer IB is really really difficult to find haha. I did apply to around 2-3 IB internships at small boutiques from my school's career center though
Not sure how good your chances are for PE, but if you can get that, do it first (search funds DO NOT count no matter how they list themselves). PWM at a BB has become a relatively common path for semi-targets close to NYC before transitioning to FO (I did this path and it worked out). I highly doubt any good HF or VC will hire you at this point (no good one hires sophomores unless you are a math genius or super well connected), but if you can get a good one, by all means.
Ah I see... Search Funds don't count? Yeah I was confused but they genuinely (VC and HF) firms posted on my school's career website asking for "either sophomores or juniors", I got that they're probably not great. How about F500 Corporate Finance? It's a very very well known beverage company cough cough and it's 100% guaranteed because of family connections.
