Where to go after growth equity?
Hey everyone. I was in investment banking before growth equity and now I am thinking about my next move. I was hoping for this community's advice on what other roles in finance might fit my profile. I am open minded on where to take my career, in or out of investing. I realize there is no perfect job, but I am looking for an environment where I can lean into my strengths, rather than round out my skill set (which was my focus in the first phase of my career). Of course, this industry has its benefits, so I want to seriously consider where I have the best chance of thriving, perhaps in a different strategy or function.
In growth equity, I am strongest at writing, presenting, and synthesizing information. I also enjoy this type of work the most, such as preparing memos and PowerPoint slides and speaking in large group settings. I am considered one of the more technical associates at my firm, but financial analysis does not speak to me in the same way. So, I do not see myself working for a large buyout shop. I am mixed about sourcing. It is interesting to learn about different companies and most people I call are friendly, but I do not have a natural sales personality. I do not mind the grind of cold outreach, but I prefer sourcing at trade shows, where conversations feel more organic.
Basically, I would like a front office job where I can write and speak a lot, with medium analysis and not too much selling. Does this exist in finance? Maybe not. I would appreciate your perspectives either way. I am sector and location agnostic.
Biz or corp dev at a late-stage startup seems right up your alley. I would also consider strategic finance roles if you aren’t too allergic to financial analysis
Yeah you sound like me. I went growth equity to series A/B venture. Rewards people who can write/speak eloquently, build relationships, think critically and build independent opinions. Excel is 10% of my day if at all.
Plan is to either stay in venture forever or go be a BD / partnerships guy at company I’ve invested in
Would love to PM you about your experience moving to VC
Ignore title, I’m currently an intern in middle-market buyout PE (my junior summer) and wanted to hear more about your starting place / path to Growth. I think it might be the right job for me, given what you said to the poster and how I feel about this role, so I’d love to PM you if able.
Prefer to stay anon but feel free to ask all Qs, happy to answer here
Hey, really insightful comment; ignore title.. in a similar boat currently a reputable growth equity shop doing consumer investing. Technical and sourcing skills are good but looking to move to a more interesting, VC type role and do less of the intense excel work we currently do. Have a few questions if you don't mind. How did you recruit for venture? Is there a lot of sourcing (cold emails, calls, etc.)? Not sure what your comp was in growth equity but how did you get comfortable with the comp in venture? I've heard it's generally quite lower than growth/PE. Any tips on how to recruit for generalist/consumer VC out in NYC?
Bump on this, would love to hear what others have done post GE. I am in a similar boat of 2 years banking, 2 years GE and now ready to explore new options. Between going downstream to traditional VC or go to a late-stage startup, but corp dev does not interest me.
Started a company. Almost no transferable skills from growth equity/late stage VC but way happier to be building.
Doesn't sound like the route you should take based on your risk tolerance and long-term goals but now you have an extra datapoint, albeit an outlier.
