Both sound really good and would help you towards BB IB. Im interested what others say.
What's the brand name like at the VC fund? Experience relevant for both internships. 1. If they're both no names, I'd lean towards banking. 2. If VC name is stronger, I'd take VC. 3. Finally, if you really love tech that much, I'd probably lean towards VC
It's hard to say. The boutique isn't branded, and I think started up in 2011. It's located in Mississauga (a suburb of Toronto) in a relatively small building. I've heard that their deal flow size isn't too big, most likely around $500,000 to probably $5-10 million.
The VC fund is located in Toronto, and so I don't think its brand name (maybe known in Toronto), but outside of that not too sure. However, they have a solid portfolio of companies and usually make investments in the millions. The person who interned there last year got a SA position at CS San Fran in the tech group.
If the VC has a brand name take it, otherwise take whichever one you personally prefer.
That seems like a valid point, are you west coast? Cali? If so, VC would seem the best route since there is so much tech banking over there
Hey just wondering what your interviews were like for the VC firm? It seems you'll get better experience from the vc so that might be a sway in your decision.
The VC interview was definitely the more difficult one. Other than behavioural questions, asked me how I would evaluate a company/investment, what would be some differences when evaluating high-risk, early growth-stage companies. I got asked almost no technical with boutique IB, but I guess they knew I was a sophomore so they said it would be mainly behavioural.
95% sure I know of the boutique IB you are talking about. VC internship sounds better and more interesting. I'd choose it just to not have to commute to Mississauga alone.
Possible VC internship on Sand Hill vs IBD (Originally Posted: 07/26/2016)
Hey everyone, I am currently a rising junior and am in the position for a possible internship with a VC firm on Sand Hill. Now while I would love to work there eventually, I know they only hire MBA grads with experience (often in IBD). I'm wondering if it would benefit me more to take a VC summer internship offer (2017) or go through the wringer and put myself out there for a Summer Analyst position in IBD? I am interning this summer in PWM at a BB. 3.25GPA business major duel concentration finance and accounting.

If you don't believe that you can secure a return offer, don't take the VC internship.
Take the VC internship.
Yeah i would jump on the Sand Hill job. That will not be a liability for you at all if you later decide to do banking when you graduate. You'll probably learn a lot more, and you may decide you like the start-up side of things which could open up some pretty interesting career paths.

VC and IB Internships - Senior Year - Where to go? (Originally Posted: 01/04/2013)
I've been a user of WSO for some time now, no posts before but an avid reader of articles and forums. Resulting from the use of this website and others I landed myself a boutique IB and VC internship for this upcoming semester of my senior year at a non-target school. I am quite excited to begin both of these positions and look forward to gaining industry experience from both. However I am stuck on where to go from here and if it's to late to land an analyst position for this upcoming summer. I know the main time IB firms hire is in the fall. I've missed this chance. I have networked with a few BB analysts but nothing too promising.
So basically I worked my ass off to get these positions and I'm not sure if any reward will come of them. I'm about to graduate and would prefer to get a job right out of the gate. I'm curious to see what others in this position would do.
Should I stay a year and attempt to get a BB internship this summer?
Should I take a position in commercial banking and come back to IB when I return to grad school in two years?
When do VC firms usually hire on analysts? How do I even find this out? ( I feel like VC is an industry in the shadows, with a lack of information on the internet about landing a job)
