i have been asking myself this question forever now. in fact, i'm not sure what bullet points to write on my resume under the wealth management section i did this past summer, which basically consisted of doing some spreadsheets tallying all the securities bought/sold by a client and the final profit/loss, as well and some research through google on some ETFs and other securities, and of course: making copies, filing, and so forth with the grunt work.

if anyone else could help out, this would be great.

Look at the job requirements for wealth management analyst positions at the bulge brackets. Try to tailor these requirements to emphasize the analytical role you took on and your familiarity with Excel and finance/accounting. For example, go here: http://www2.goldmansachs.com/careers/inside_goldman_sachs/business_snap…

When I did my private wealth internship before ib, I did something similar to this. What I did as a summer intern in pwm was actually very similar to what an analyst full time does in that group. So possible bullet points could be:

  • Performed asset allocation and risk analysis, client portfolio reviews
  • Created pitchbooks that marketed alternative investment strategies developed and sponsored by X
  • Developed a thorough understanding of alternative investment strategies, including private equity, real estate and hedge funds
  • etc.

Good luck

Agree with masterg. Yet a funny thing is that I just had two interviews with well respected IB's and none asked me about my internship at PWM. I was kind of surprised because I worked their for about 9 months and you would expect at least couple of questions. Instead I got things like "walk me through DCF, financial statements" and so on and forth.
