Rejected from PWM, lol.
So I recently applied for a PWM internship (I'm a sophomore aiming for ibanking), and I found out today that I was rejected. It's super hard to find one because most want you to receive school credit. My school doesn't provide credit unless I apply for an independent study/find a professor to report to. Anyways, I don't even know what I can do anymore this summer. I go to a target, and it was a real blow when I was rejected to a PWM internship. Should I just give up? Should I keep trying at places like Edward Jones?
Note: . I tried emailing small bb banks to ask for internships, but they never respond.
Your a Sophomore, it doesn't have to be finance this summer. You do; however, have to do something worth talking about. Try working on a campaign if all else fails.
I lol'd when I saw "small bb bank". I think he meant bb as in "boutique bank"
I think it would definitely help a lot to have a finance related one. If not PWM, maybe a F500 finance or an ibanking/other finance internship at a boutique.
Best you can probably do now is just pound the pavement and cold call every place you can find. Boutique IBs, boutique financial advisory firms even. Don't give up!
P.S. - What the hell is a "small BB bank"?
This. Aim lower. A lot lower. Something is wayyyy better than nothing and you definitely don't need to be working at a name brand place your sophomore year.
Were you able to follow-up over the phone with any of them? I've found that most places ignore emails from students looking for internships, but can be more receptive to calls. I'd reach out to let them know that you're still very interested in any openings.
you go to a target?
relax. i didn't do anything until junior year
Sure why not?
To be honest, I think it's too early for you to even know you're aiming for banking in the first place. To each his own, though. That being said, BB internships are nearly impossible for sophomores, aim lower. And the campaign idea isn't bad at all, that's what a lot of people I know did after their sophomore year (2010 elections). Just make sure you can fit it into your narrative on your resume of it somehow pushing you toward finance/banking (I didn't like this aspect of politics but I like this aspect of finance, blah blah blah).
Just a clarifying point, when you told us about their preference for having you work for school credit, is that as opposed to payment or as opposed to working for free? Because if you haven't offered to work an unpaid internship, it's prob why you're being beat-out of these kinds of spots.
Call Ameriprise, get some bullshit on your resume.
Yes, I meant boutique, sorry. I'm a little disconcerted.
As crazy as it sounds check out craigslist for internships, some small boutiques post on there and many wealth management firms and small finance related companies do as well.
Enjoy this summer, it goes downhill from here.
