Advice for Green L/S Analyst with M&A Background

I recently joined a smaller ($500m) hedge fund after several years in middle market IBD doing mostly M&A transactions. After a little time on the job I am loving the change from all aspects. However, I’m still getting used to the buyside/public markets/new industries.

Given it’s a small firm and the markets have been crazy recently, my team has not had as much time to teach me and help me learn as much as both them and I were expecting.

Therefore, I’m looking for any advice/tips as to what I can be doing on my own to ensure my progression continues. I’n currently utilizing the top resources on the HF all time threads but wondering if anyone had more tailored advice. Particularly any tips on the following would be helpful:

  • Modeling out quarterly financials (ie. how to think thru reasonable projections that make sense)

  • Effectively leading 1v1 mgmt. calls and meetings to get the information we need for our models/thesis within the usual 45-60mins

  • Any other tips/tricks/advice to make sure I can become a successful analyst and eventually transition to the next level
