Ags trading at BB
Does anyone have an opinion on ags trading at a big BB? Is it an interesting role/ what do you spend your time doing? How does it compare to an ABCD firm in terms of long term comp? Recently offered a role so interested!

l'd imagine it's similar to metals trading out of a lot of london/singapore BB offices. Mostly market making and taking down corporate client hedging orders. a lil spec here and there
The downside is the lack of learning and exit opps that would exist if you are not a superstar.
ABCD would be a much better experience by a mile. On the other hand comp should be good at the BB but i'd question the longevity
Macquarie
Citi
GS
I don't think there is much spec activity at all. Boring customer orders banging out 4 lots of corn for a tiny piece of PIMCO's book...yawn
ABCD and don't look back. Just think, could be in butt fuck Iowa at an elevator/ethanol plant/crush house for a year or two making 80k and be the most eligible bachelor for the surrounding 5 counties. Way better than hinge in NYC lol
This comment is so wrong it hurts, and anyone who’s ever been at an elevator/3rd tier city/done a crop tour will tell you just how awful the dating/social scene is. All the attractive girls leave for college and the ones who stick around are a overweight or pregnant. Hinge in nyc is infinitely better.
As someone who’s worked at an ABCD and a bank, I’d take the bank and it’s not even close. Pay will be 2x for the first 10 years of your career, ABCD only pays more if you’re running a desk
but who stays at a bank for the first 10 years of their career?
Lmao classic WSO...it's clearly a joke re: the dating scene
Thanks for the insight. What about learning opportunities/potential hedge fund exits? Do you learn how to spec trade?
stfu. you're just mad because your gf left you
If you want to be in commodities over long term join ABCD. Learning the physical side is something you will only get through experience and operations at one of these producers. You will never learn to trade physical at a BB because in physical you are trying to make money while optimizing your value chain.
Long term I want to be paper trading ags, so ideally whatever best prepares me for that. I heard physical traders often have a tough time transitioning to paper, so there's that to account for.
Why would you want to paper trade ags? that seems like a death trap for a career.
Learn the phys, understand the supply chain and trade both phys and fin
Seems you have answered your own questions. Lots of people on wso seem to be overhyping physical these days many physical jobs dont pay that great longterm nor are that exciting. As for managing a small hedge for PIMCO monthly well someone has to do it.
Truly also find a bit confusing how someone could have a major interest in Ags and but mainly want to focus on technical analysis and behaviorial side of trading. I would say you are better suited to learn trading a BB in general.
The reason why ags at the start of a career is because to me energy is branching out in two different places for renewables - gas is moving towards hydrogen and oils are going towards biofuels. I think ags are just rock solid and will only continue to grow going into the future, and are a solid commodity long term
gas aint moving towards hydrogen what are you talking about
From what I've heard going around, the renewable gas is going to be hydrogen and the renewable fuels are biofuels. I'm based in Europe, so maybe that's just for gas here or maybe I'm just wrong - not really a gas guy
