Arizona State

I'm new to the board, but I am a freshman at Arizona State. I passed up other opportunities for better schools and took an out-of-state scholarship to come here. I wanted to know if ASU was well-represented on Wall Street? The WP Carey School of Business here is ranked in the Top 25 by US News and I plan to major in finance.

Did I hurt my chances of getting a BB internship (probably after my junior year) by coming to ASU over other target schools?

Have you checked your career services to see which firms and for what positions they are recruiting for at your school? From what I understand, ASU is extremely non-target so to answer your question -- Yes you did hurt your chances in terms of on-campus recruiting.

ASU carries a pretty strong stigma. To be honest, if you don't have anyone from ASU currently at a BB, it will be extremely difficult to get in even through networking, mainly due to the lack of a network.

While the chicks are really hot, I would seriously consider transfering to another school. But do take advantage of the benefit of having lots of hot chicks while you're there.

I've heard one or two a year from ASU go to BB, and a handful of others go to smaller boutiques or second tier firms like Wachovia or BofA. Definitely not a core recruiting school, but if you network with the few alumni ASU has, you might be ok. And I agree, Tempe's women are fine.

I visited ASU as a junior and senior in high school. I'm from Boston- who could pass up the amazing girls and weather? A top 25 business school was a plus though.

Academics are very important to me though, I have a 3.9 gpa. Hopefully if I keep that up, it will help me with getting a good internship and eventually a job offer. I know that beacause of ASU's size, there has to be some alumni out there to network with.

I have never posted on this forum for a number of reasons, but I feel compelled to stick up for my school. Out of high school I was accepted into a top Ivy League school, yet I chose to attend ASU. I come from a hardworking family of modest means, and the financial burden of sending a son to an expensive private school was simply too much to bear. As a National Merit Scholar, ASU provides a tuition waver AND living expenses for 4 years, and the opportunity to be debt free upon graduation is very attractive to many young people (myself included).

While the academic vigor of ASU's business program might not be on par with other top educational institutions as of 2007, the opportunity to get full-time substantive work experience while attending class is very feasible given ASU's proximity to Phoenix and Scottsdale and the business school's flexible course schedules.

The ASU I-banking alumni network is small, but dedicated and growing. True, getting into IBD recruiting is not as easy as dropping your resume through the career service website like it is at target schools, but it can be done with a little foresight and diligence. After graduation this May, I will be working for what I consider to be one of the best firms to be at on Wall Street right now.

I’d be more than willing to share my experiences with any ASU students reading this forum, just please send me a PM.
