Books for Macro

Hello WSO,

I'm a commodity trader now but I've always been interested in general macro markets stuff. I've dabbled in and out of it during college but want to get a complete view of it. Could anyone of you HF guys recommend to me some books to get started with the following subjects;

  •  FX
  • Monetary policy
  • Bonds

Ideally, the type of book I'm looking for is something like Basic Economics by Sowell or Options, Futures, other Derivatives by Hull. Well and clearly written, no pompous "intellectual" bullshit.

Thanks!

checkout the cross asset macro research put out by MorganStanley and GoldmanSachs (full of rates and FX macro trade ideas)

they have an archive of all their older stuff that clients can access...there is years worth of research to read....that would be a good start.

(also, take macro economics classes in college)

just google it...you're welcome

Soros is a bit rough around the edges as a writer, but that book is the bible of global macro and a fascinating insight into the mind of a speculator and the thought processes required to be truly great. I re-read bits and pieces all the time. Not to mention the real time experiment captures everything leading up and through one of the greatest trades ever when he shorted the dollar after the plaza accord. The man put up 100% returns that year if I remember correctly.

I used to do Asia-Pacific PE (kind of like FoF). Now I do something else but happy to try and answer questions on that stuff.
