Can a Civil Engineering undergraduate work at a Hedge Fund?
I am going to study Civil Engineering at one of the top universities in my country, but the job I’d really like to do is in Finance.
The reasons why I’m studying Civil Engineering are
1. There are no Finance programs in my country, only Business Administration and Economics.
2. I’d like to play it safely here. I don’t guarantee that I’ll get a job in IBD, PE or HF and if I get, I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to get a Visa. On the other hand, if I study Engineering at this uni, I can guarantee a job in my country and probably in Europe, too.
I have read about people who get into BB IB firms with an Engineering background, but can I do the same with HF? Can I get an internship while studying Engineering?
I have a very good GPA and I am really good with Maths.
Are there any courses for people who know nearly nothing about Finance that I can take to increase my chances?
Yes, bonus points for any civil-related focused HFs.
Not sure if there are muni focused funds or groups.
The eng degree shows your smart and might put you ahead of someone else.

But what if it is not a civil-focused one? Like the large ones (Bridgewater, Man Group, etc).
Also, what about the financial knowledge? Can I break into the industry without knowing anything about finance?!
Yes. speaking from experience.
But if you want to do the engineering to finance track civil might be the worst choice of the engineering disciplines. Mostly because civil is considered "easy" engineering comparatively. Second reason is it doesn't lend itself to many industries directly. BB I got public finance interviews which is considered the least sexy part of banks. EE would lend itself to TMT and other groups easier. Bio-engineering into biotech etc. Simple are not a lot of publicly traded construction companies so you can't go into an interview and say you like the industry but would rather be the banker than the practitioner. Along with having a little bit of industry knowledge.
FWIW though I'd study the form of engineering you think you would most like to practice if you do not end up in finance. If you are neutral on that question then I'd lean towards another engineering practice that is considered more prestigious/harder.

Got any suggestions on how to get an introduction to finance?
I had loads of ap credit. So I filled out ug with all the first and second level econ intro courses. Took some accounting. Business for engineers etc. I would try to take electives like that where possible.
After that is just getting work thru your schools career center

Hi everyone! Im studying Mechanical Engineering (2nd year) in Greece (so non target ofc) but i found out that Engineering is not for me. Fluid dynamics, thermodynamics etc are really boring. I want something more challenging. So, i would like to become a trader. Some relatives do forex trading (mainly for fun) and i really like the whole concept so i want to be a professional trader or work where trades are happening (=HF). Im considering doing an MBA or a Master in Finance when i finish Engineering in France or UK (these are the only foreing languages that i know) because i do not know much about the world of investments.
Which EU country would you suggest me (i say EU, because i cant go to USA, Canada or Australia - Visa issues)? Should i start learning german for expample (Frankfurt is a big financial center)? Netherlands and Switzerland are good places too. What do you think?
Can i actually get a job in a HF? What are my chances? I hear that i should go in IB first, because HF hire only ex-IB guys. Is that true? I find IB really boring though...
