Chances at top Mfin
hello WSO community,
I apologize in advance for the long post, but I want to give as much detail as possible so people who have gone through the process can accurately assess my profile.
I’m a senior from an extreme non target public school (T100 probably) and majored in CS and applied math. Only one prior internship teaching math at a non profit in New York...I have a pretty good finance internship this summer at a small firm in Chicago where I should learn a lot and my boss is ex-IB associate at Goldman so I’m going to absorb a ton of knowledge from her and hopefully a letter of rec as well. I am planning to apply to schools this fall and am going to take multiple trips to NYC this summer if I can find execs on the street that will give me a few minutes of their time over coffee.
Really good personal statement and letters of rec
Gpa: 3.87
GRE: 169 Q, 166v
Econ research with machine learning techniques , have great letter of rec from this prof

I feel like my abroad grades will wreck my chances at the top schools. I took these courses credit / No Credif and my transcript just says “International Program Spring 17” without listing the courses but I’m worried the schools will still ask for the grades. The university was in asia and extremely cutthroat...the finals were worth 60% of my grade and of course I got a respiratory infection the day before they began. I have medical documentation of this but I doubt it’ll do anything. I really hope most programs don’t ask and wonder if I could just tell them I took them credit no credit to dissuade them from pressing further.
If you’re still reading, I really appreciate it. I just want to give a detailed view of my profile so that I can get an accurate gauge of whether I have a chance at the top 10 schools.
For now I’m just researching schools and reading Rosenbaum’s book on Investment banking and a couple books on PE and stocks to gain more knowledge of this industry...I’m hoping to get a small IB internship for the Spring ‘20 since I graduate in december, if I get it in time I can put that on my applications as well.
My end goal would an M&A or S&T position at a BB or Elite Boutique in NYC. I know this is lofty but I want to set my sights high. I hear that social skills are really important and I feel like that is another area of strength for me.
Anyways, to anyone that made it this far, I truly appreciate you and your time. I know the professionals on this forum have a crazy amount of experience and could offer some really valuable feedback.. would really appreciate a candid evaluation of my chances at Princeton (prob 0.01%), MIT, Columbia, LSE, Vandy, ‘Nova, Oxbridge, etc... if I’m missing any good schools that place in BB IB please let me know. I know the hours are crazy but If I get a shot at this , I’ll sleep in the office if that’s what it takes
@TNA" I’ve seen you give great feedback on most of the mfin posts, and was hoping you could give me some feedback on my chances at some of the top programs ? I feel like most are a reach, but understand you’ve seen a lot of apps over the years and would have a more accurate appraisal. I would really appreciate it !
Hey slayer11, what a lonely thread. I'm here since nobody responded ...so maybe one of these discussions will help:
You're welcome.
I know :( appreciate your reply though. do you think you could give me a slight idea of my chances at Vandy? Thank you
Solid chance at Vandy I’d imagine.
There’s a huge difference between the MSF programs you listed. You should really research these programs more.
Also, getting into a BB/EB at the Analyst level is going to be extremely hard if not impossible. Maybe if you’re coming from MIT MSF that’d give you a decent shot because you can do the extended program and try for a SA spot.
Edit: you seem to have a solid profile. Go for all the programs that place into IB and S&T. But again, research these programs some more.
hey thanks for the reply and great feedback.
I completely get how the programs I listed make it seem like I’m all over the place. I will definitely do more research but from what I understand some of them are highly quantitative while others are more general finance. I’m intentionally applying to both types of programs as I have a pretty strong math background and am interested in the more quant type roles out there as well as M&A and S&T.
And I see Vandy places in some EB but not much BB. Did you do an mfin? would it be okay if I messaged you to gain some more insight on your experience with the program and recruiting ?
Appreciate all your time
Yeah - feel free to send a PM would be happy to share some of experience
Decide if you want a MFE or a MSF.
Apply to MIT and Vanderbilt. Also look at UVA, UT Austin and USC. Maybe WUSTL.
If you want to work in the US, go to US schools. You have a high GPA, plenty of quant level math classes and the GRE converts to what looks like a 770 GMAT. Strong profile. Forget Nova.
Also, I would suggest a more realistic career outcome. If you don't get into MIT, or decide to target MFE programs and get into top quant maters, you will be targeting regional BB offices or MM firms. You don't have a lot of finance experience, nothing with a big brand, your undergrad is non-target to the extreme and you don't have a finance background.
I really appreciate that candid feedback. I think adjusting my expectations is a pretty important point.
Would it be okay if I PM’d you a couple of follow up questions ?
Thanks again for all of your time
Is 60% final not the norm? Most my classes have 60%+ finals.
