Cold Emailing MD Before Applying to Posted Job?

I saw an associate role posted online that matches my profile and I am looking to lateral, so I will be applying. I have the email of an MD in the group. Should I reach out to him before or after applying? And if I do, what should I say? We don't really have any connection, I guess I could just ask for an informational interview and at the end mention that I saw the job listing and that I am interested?

This is a 50/50 IMO - put yourself in his shoes....it depends on a lot

What kind of mood is he in when he receives the e-mail? How is the e-mail worded?

If you do it, the chances of him forwarding on to HR and saying "I want this guy in for an interview 100%" is slim. But maybe if you catch him in a good mood.

If you send, I would keep it short and sweet..."I just wanted to shoot a quick note...am applying online, big fan of deals you've brought in and closed....would love opp to join team...backround in xyz has prepared me for the role..."

Maybe 2-3 sentences MAX

I will, respectfully, take a different stance than ResponsibleRinger . He or she may be better positioned than I am with regards to IB (which I have never done). With that caveat in mind (bolded emphasis mine).

  1. You can't control this. So no need to worry about what his mood may be. It's a waste of time and energy. The sooner you learn to live by that, the better off you will be. Changing this behavior is easier said than done and is a life long project (for me as well!)

  2. Maybe. Maybe not. The chances of him forwarding to HR are literally 0% if you don't send one, right? My view is: what's the worst that can happen? He will probably ignore or delete it and you've lost nothing. Unless its something super egregious or the person is off his rocker (at which point you don't want to work for him anyhow), chances of a ding are low. If he does forward, then, well, you have an interview that you may not have previously had and that's good, right?

  3. Totally agree. Short, to the point. You saw a posting, and you are very interested in the position because of XYZ. You have applied online but would love to connect in person and learn (first hand) more over a coffee/10 minute phone call at his convenience? Resume attached. No response after a few days? Call him. No response? That's ok. You can leave it there. Or keep bugging him (your call).

This is banking. At a higher level its a sales job and nothing more. Show some hustle and don't be scared. After all, his job is to hustle and generate revenue right. In a certain sense you are doing the same thing.

TLDR: Just do it.

Good Luck
