Cornell or Umich (undergrad biz for both)

Got into both, so which one? In my opinion, it was much harder to get into cornell than ross. I also feel when I visited that the caliber of the students at ross is lower than cornell? What do you guys think? Don't kill me! Not trying to stir up war.

cornell doesn't have an undergrad biz school but undergrad biz program. just look at undergrad biz rankings. Btw, never said "undergrad biz school", said "undergrad biz". So please check the facts b4 calling me a dude, which i'm not.

Cornell does not have a b-school, but they do have a business program. The OP never alluded to Cornell having a b-school anyways.

They are both great schools. At this point I would start to focus on whether or not you want a big school, ivy league name, which campus/nightlife you liked more, etc. Neither place is going to steer you wrong here. Some may argue Ross has the edge in this one, which they probably have, but I would stress the importance of spending the next four years at the place you are going to enjoy the most. Have fun and if you work hard you are certainly not going to be limited by either when it comes time to find a job/apply to MBA programs...

Snoop46, are you saying that the "ibanking" thing is not good at cornell?

Also, someone explain to me y ross is considered good or prestigious or w/e. I talked to several recruiters and they never mention umich but they mention the ivies, including cornell, a lot. Also, since ross has that freshman apply for sophomore year to ross, i've met upperclassmen there who said that it's not hard to get into umich to begin with and to get into ross, once ur in umich, u only need a 3.0 and ur in?

Thanks

I'd suggest Michigan. The football. The undergrad experience. The big school atmosphere. The fratastic scene. No brainer.

Ross is very competitive. And no, 3.0 is not a 100% into Ross... not even close. If you only have a 3.0 at the end of your freshman year, then you have some bigger problems.

Dude, this is a no-brainer. Cornell all the way. Ivy League. Great hockey, great lacrosse. Great social life/bars/greek life/collegetown. I'm at Cornell currently and ALL of the banks recruit here, including some private equity shops - including Blackstone. The Undergrad Business program here is strong and getting stronger. You're a fool not to go Ivy League.

Can't wait until I see College Gameday at Cornell for the big lacrosse game with Brown.

Both schools offer great recruiting opportunities across the board, and place well in to IB. You should go wherever you'd prefer to be for the next 4 years, since college really is one of the best periods of your life. Assuming you work hard and are a smart kid, all the doors will be open at either school when it comes time to work. Congrats on getting into both.

if you are smart, cool, and work hard you will get jobs from either ross or aem

go to the school you like better

i go to a top 5 state school (think ut, uva, ucla, umich, cal) and i am so glad that i got to have a blast during college and still got a top 3 bank while some kids had to live miserable lives at ivies w/o sports or hot chicks

Go to Cornell. The ivy league network will serve you well. I don't think Michigan is much worse for banking recruiting than Cornall (they're probably similar..Cornell having an edge though), but since you're just 18 and about to start college, you cannot possibly be sure you want to do banking. Going to Cornell will open more doors for you in other fields as well.

the weather sucks at both places, but Ithaca is one of the grayest, rainiest cities in America. It is also ultra, ultra uber-liberal and the on-campus atmosphere is weird/cut-throat/and depressed to say the very least. If you visited on a sunny day, you got one of the 5 there will be this year.

Also, depending on what you want, they are both big schools but UMich has a lot more people and great sports/tradition, etc. Ithaca's College Town isn't a bad atmosphere and there's a ton going on so don't let the fact that CU is in the middle of nowhere deter you on that front.

Though no school in the history of the world has benefit more from entering a collegiate athletic conference, Cornell does belong to the Ivy League. That being said, take a Cornell student's words about the Ivy mantra with a grain of salt; b/c they are always crapped on by the rest of the league, this scenario gives them a chance to gloat about being Ivy. Silly though it may be...it can make a difference and it does mean a lot to a lot of people.

You can end up either place, but do you want NYC or Chi? Summer/post grad options are likely very similar and if you do well at either you are in great shape, but tend to think geography can be a factor in where you want to go.

Can't say one is better than the other and they are both very strong options, so agree with others that this is a total gut-call.

If it were me...I would say Cornell, but I'd stay away from the bridges. I would also look longingly to spending my Saturdays sitting among 108,000 at The Big House as opposed to 5,000 at Schoelkopf...

Everyone here makes some very valid points - right on the money. I am not qualified to speak specifically about Umich, but here are my impressions of Cornell:

Cornell really has two 'business'options; AEM and the Hotel School. The Hotel School probably has just as much respect as AEM on the recruiting front at Cornell. In fact, most every AEMer (who is smart at least) ventures over to the hotel school to take all of the Real Estate/Finance courses which are hands down the BEST offered at Cornell. Aside from this, the Hotel School Alumni network is ridiculously strong and active and if you make a good impression the Alumni will bend over backwards to to have you work for them. Just to clarify, alot of alumni are in the hotel business (obviously), but just as many are doing other things such as I-Banking, Hedge Funds, PE, etc. One other point; the Hotel School allows you to 'concentrate' in an area that will appear on your degree when you graduate --> Bachelor of Science in Hotel Adminstration Concentrating in Financial Management/Security Analysis/Corporate Finance/Financial Consulting/Real Estate Finance/Real Estate Devleopment . . . you get the point.

So if you are strictly in it for the education and opportunities Cornell is the answer. If you want to enjoy your fours years of college go to Umich and dominate.

Mr.Green:
U of M girls are disgusting, so do not base your decision on that...

Don't base the next four years of your life on females...I mean...Cornell doesn't have much to brag about in that department...

The comment about the Hotel School and AEM is accurate. Both are strong programs and if you come to Cornell I would recommend taking electives in both the Hotel School and the Johnson Graduate School of Management.

Hey jackass! Have you even been to MI?

But, hey, if you can't handle a girl who is a size 6, likes football, and drinks beer, go find an out east bulemic airhead, be my guest!

Congrats on your offers--either way you can't lose. Go where you feel is the best for you!

Best of luck.

Numerous companies recruit at Umich and it is well respected for being a top b-school (#1 by WSJ). It also just received 100M by Ross, so future students will have many perks. Also, I hear the other ivy league schools look down upon Cornell.

umich is better in terms of recruiting numbers. both places are top notch. it is really what u make of it.
