Corporate Banking (industry choice) vs Investment Banking (Energy)
I'm currently weighing SA offers between Corporate Banking at a low BB/high MM (think RBC) and Investment Banking at a MM (think Truist). Both pay about the same, but with Corporate Banking I'll basically get to choose which industry coverage I go into, and I think I could reasonably lateral into IB for the full-time job. With the IB internship, I'll be in Houston with Energy and can't see myself getting into an industry I'm more interested in.
Really looking for advice on pros and cons between the two offers.
How much do you value free-time over money?
I'd say I personally value optionality/career path possibilities over most everything right now. I'm pretty willing to grind at this stage of my career, and I'd eventually like to work at a hedge fund, but most importantly I don't see myself working in energy long-term. However, I don't want to reject an IB offer if I can't realistically get one for FT down the road.
Corporate banking unless you have ties/interest to Houston. Lateraling to IB for FT is a bit tricky, but if you don't make it you could easily do so at 6-8 months and even upgrade firms.
Going against the grain here and saying energy IB. You should be able to lateral to another group within Truist if you perform during the internship & get a return offer. It is a great program too.
