Do You Use Slack?
Slack is nearing a $7 billion valuation after their latest round of financing. They recently surpassed 8 million active users and 3 million paid users. Is anyone here one of them? Would you invest in Slack or do you think its overvalued?
I do, but then again I also work at a tech company now. It's a pretty neat tool with some cool features, but in general I don't like having multiple ways (email, slack, phone, etc.) for people to hit me up and tell me to do stuff.
Slack is nice, I used it during my internship (at a tech firm), but it does nothing that other platforms (Outlook, Messenger, IM, etc.) can't do. Definitely overvalued (and so is 90% of startups in SV). Seriously, we have companies producing Google Docs extensions valued at 30mil? Gtfo
I used slack at my latest internship. I recently completed an internship for a micro-VC organization. The app was the preferred method of communicating for all things non-work material related.
In regards to investing in Slack, the company is private and probably is not releasing its private company financials. Therefore, you can't invest in them currently and can't value them based off financials.
When I said “would you invest” I meant more in reference to whether General Atlantic and Dragoneer were making good decisions by investing privately, but right I should’ve phrased that more clearly.
We just switched to Slack, we'd been using AIM as our IM platform up until it shut down in 2017 lol
I've heard great things about Slack, but for many people it will be more than what they need. We use Wrike, which is pretty cheap, pretty robust for general project and task management, and user-friendly. Would recommend
One of the most ludicrous pieces of software and company of all time and a poster child of the dot com bubble two, Quran hai tu. 1.2 billion given to an instant messaging anti productivity company?? 30 times more than was given to google???
I use it across all companies.
My company uses it. It’s pretty efficient and would basically be impossible for us to unplug at this point. The engineers love it.
Will be a double from $7bn, maybe more.
I have used it at my previous internship, and almost every single startup in my area uses it.
It’s chat/IM features honestly mirror that of Discord and many other free alternatives, but its file trasnsfer and integration with other web apps is top notch.
I don’t know enough to say whether or not its valuation is fair, but I believe that Slack will be around for a while. The worst case being getting sold off to the likes of Google to fully integrate with the Cloud service and replace the shitty Google+ Chats thing.
I think it's the best text-based communication software out at the moment, bar none.
The only sensibly ran and valued internet company is craigslist. Essentially all internet companies can just be a fat guy in a basement. Anything else is just shareholder theft.
Are you autistic?
How different is Slack from Skype for Business? Almost all of the major banks and accounting firms I know of use it because of the integration with outlook.
I use slack for a small non-profit I started and I use Skype at my firm. I think slack has much better file sharing capabilities than Skype. Slacks group message structure is also much better than Skype. Obviosuly there are benefits with Skype and that it integrates well with outlook. We also use it to set up all of our dial in phone calls, which is very easy and convienant.
Long story short, I think slack wins in terms of chat based messenging but Skype for business is much better overall with the phone integration.
Nope, too many apps around; can't use them all
I don't. Have done so briefly for a project but didn't like it that much. As for it being overvalued, I think it is just like a lot of apps - I don't know a single person using Viber yet it's valued at $1bn with 800mn+ users.
Our team use Slack and have paid subscription. Don't regret at all. It's very handy to have video calls/chatting bots/private(public) discussion channels in one app.
Do investment banks use slack? I know it sounds stupid but what's their main method of communication? Emails still?
