Equity Research Career w/ Stutter
Hi everyone,
I am a rising sophomore who attends a none- target school and I have a moderate to severe stutter. I am really passionate about having a career in finance and equity research really captures my attention. Is there a lot of client interaction and how essential are verbal communication skills in ER? I don’t let my stutter stop me from accomplishing anything but would like to know how it would be for me and what I should do to better my chances. Any tips in terms of networking, interviewing, or anything else will be deeply appreciated as well.
Thank you!

as a sell side research analyst you’ll be on calls with clients as well as your coverage companies
True. I spend a lot of time on calls with the coverage companies. Clients are handled mostly by the investment advisors though.
Nobody is going to penalize you for having a stutter. One of the CFOs of a company that we cover has a stutter (which I stopped noticing after the second quarterly call). One of my old bosses has a stutter which evidently hasn't impeded his career as he consistently had the highest client interactions at the firm. This is a non issue.
My senior analyst has a stutter, and he hasn’t had any issues with hosting calls or finding clients who want to talk to him. I don’t think it should be an issue.
