F100 Financial Analysis or F100 Corporate Venture Capital

Hi Everyone,

First post in WSO! I just wanted to post a predicament I am currently facing and gather more insight and advice on the two positions I have been offered this week. I recently graduated from a non-target in the Northeast with a slightly above average GPA. However, I managed to gain two years of work experience during my college years in various industries including Asset Management, Custodial Operations, Start-up FP&A, and an investment banking summer analyst position overseas. Anyway, back to my point, I have been offered a position in the controller group at Siemens Healthineers, who are top dogs in the healthcare industry. The role interacts very closely with the CFO (I report directly to a Vice President) and handles the budgeting and forecasting, as well as performance reports for upper management. It's a solid position with great career growth, however, given the nature of large corps it will be more reporting heavy in the beginning as I will be considered a junior analyst. It involves a lot of gathering/organizing data from different internal finance units (R&D, CRM, Sales) before conducting performance analysis over the previous months/years. There is a decent bit of forward-looking analysis involved too in terms of ad-hoc reports for the vice president/CFO and quarterly forecasts. What really draws me to Siemens is that it is a company that really takes care of their employees and encourages internal growth. My direct boss joined right after college and in 16 years has made it to Vice President, and everyone on my team has been there for most of their careers with good career progression/promotions. Having a German passport myself, I think the company and potential career growth globally is perfect for me and would be my top choice for any F500. Side Note: I know this isn't an FLDP but many FLDP graduates have moved into similar analyst/business unit controller positions at Siemens and this job description was listed as for someone with 1-5 years of work experience.

The other position I have been offered is at another F100 but in their Corporate Venture Capital Arm. They currently have 2 managing directors and a principal managing 500 million in investments that range from early to growth stage, and I would be the fourth person on the team. The position was listed as an operations role, but not in the traditional back-office sense. Apart from the baseline 6 figure all in comp at this position, what's good about this role is I would be responsible for tracking the performance of our portfolio companies, working on the financial modeling and recording transactions for the purpose of calculating IRR, ROI, and DPI. The operations nature of the role involves gathering data from the CFO's of our portfolio companies to make accurate forecasts and communicating closely with the treasury department of the F100 parent company. I will also be given a smaller role in analyzing investment opportunities and performing valuation analysis from time to time. I think what really attracts me to the role is the 6 figure salary straight out of undergrad as well as the opportunity to learn under two extremely accomplished managing directors who have spent their careers in corporate venture capital.

Both salaries are extremely competitive with the CVC role being only about 25% more money all in comp, and money isn't the only thing that matters to me. I really like my managers at both positions and am very open to both industries. However, I'm slightly worried about the more operational nature of my work at the CVC, and potential exit ops esp with no real operational or corporate work experience. The role seems operational in nature the CVC and I am basically there to fill in for the reporting and administrative tasks. I was wondering what kind of exit ops would I be seeing from a position such as this?
The corporate finance group at Siemens, however, has been extremely helpful and supportive of my career goals and has mentioned multiple times how high level the team is and important to the CFO. It may not be the greatest money right away compared to VC but I see myself staying at the company for a long time and developing a real corporate career. I am also wary that venture capital job opportunities don't come up every day, and I would hate to regret turning it down later down the line in my career.

I guess I just wanted to hear your thoughts and opinions on the two positions and potential career trajectories you see from these two opportunities. I'm only 22, so making a decision on two very different positions this early in my career is quite daunting. Therefore, I would like to hear other thoughts and utilize your experience on what choice you would personally make and why.
